Victims and heroines

All around the developing world, women and girls are the pillars of their families and communities. As part of their daily tasks, they cook, clean, farm, collect wood and fetch water for their households; and provide them with health and hygienic care. Because of these roles, they are particularly vulnerable. In situations of conflict, they become more and more the main targets – through sexual assault and common violence. The importance of their role is their weakness. For the contenders, to humiliate and control them is a way to demoralize the “enemy.” Sometimes, they are also made pawns in a sadistic game of ethnic cleansing. Ironically, when we look closely at war zones and violent prone areas, we’ll see that most of the peacemakers, even in the remotest and harshest places, are also women. The Catholic nuns, who risk their own lives to help the victims and alleviate their burden, are among them. The courage and resilience they show is a lesson in humanity.

The magazine is internationally read and appreciation is received virtually from every corner of the world.

We hope that, through this means of communication, we can contribute to the task of spreading the Good News of the Gospel from and to Asia following the call of the late Pope John Paul II: "We pray that, in the Third Christian Millennium, a great harvest of faith will be reaped in the vast and vital continent of Asia." Thus the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus with the spirit of their founder Saint Daniel Comboni make an effort to take the message of Christ to everyone near and far, and especially now to the most populous and culture-rich continent on earth.

WORLD MISSION tries to keep you in touch with realities and peoples' lives the world over so as to make you updated and in close contact with your brothers and sisters in the world thus promoting communication, common purpose, communion and human development. There is hope that, as long as communication is possible, mission is there; it is by communicating, by knowing, by being in touch, by analyzing and by seeing peoples' realities that we may be able to be close, to love and help each other laying down the foundation for a new world order where justice peace charity and freedom dwell and prosper.

WORLD MISSION comes to you in 11 issues/year and a Mission Calendar. It is rich in articles, news, photos, analysis and opinions from every country and people in the world, especially from those you least hear about in other news magazines. The Philippines is also part and parcel of the World Mission's spirit: adopting the Filipino character of cheerfulness and optimism in approaching others, bringing you truthful news, giving you a feeling of belonging, and fostering encouragement and joyful hope.

World Mission (WM) was awarded another trophy by the prestigious Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) in its 31st edition. The magazine was distinguished as the Best Local Community/Parish Newspaper for the third consecutive year.
