APRIL-MAY ISSUE

LIFE IS REAL

I was shocked by the following CNN report, at the beginning of last month (March): "A South-Korean couple was arrested for neglecting their 3-month old baby till she starved to death. They were so busy taking care of their" online child" that they forgot to feed their real-life baby. The couple fed their 3-month-old daughter once a day between marathon stretches in a local Internet cafe, where they were raising a virtual child in a fantasy role-playing the game Prius Online. Prius Online is a 3-D game in which players nurture an online companion, Anima, a young girl with mysterious powers who grows and increases her skills as the game progresses."

Nowadays, it is so tempting to live in a world of fantasy and fiction - using the technological means at our disposal - to evade our difficulties, struggles and the real challenges of life. If, on one hand, technology has made the world smaller, on the other hand, it has isolated many - those who remain before computer monitors for hours and hours, losing touch with the reality.

The Easter Mystery (Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus) is a call to embrace life in its mysterious reality not only of pain and sorrow but also of joyful celebration and hope. From the Resurrection, a new life-giving spirit pervaded the hearts and enlightened the minds of yesterday's disciples of Jesus. This is also true of today's. We are an Easter people, made to re-discover life, not by evading suffering, but by embracing it in the likeness of Jesus. Life is real. Jesus' Resurrection is real. We are disciples in a real world.

WELCOME NOTE

Mission is a call for all, but it can be concretized in our lives in many different ways, according to the call of God and the gifts He has bestowed on us to enrich each other. Allow me to recall the precious words of our beloved missionary, Pope John Paul II:

"The call to mission acquires a singular urgency, particularly if we look at that part of humanity which still does not know Christ or recognizes Him. Yes, brothers and sisters, mission ad gentes is today more than ever valid. I hold, impressed on my heart, the face of humanity that I have been able to contemplate during my pilgrimages: this is the face of Christ reflected in that of the poor and the suffering; the face of Christ mirrored in those who live like sheep without a shepherd (Mk 6:34).

Mission is "the joyful proclamation of a gift meant for all, and to be offered to all with the greatest respect for the freedom of each one: the gift of the revelation of the God who is Love, the God who "so loved the world that he gave his only Son' (Jn 3:16).

The Church, therefore, cannot forego her missionary activity among the peoples of the world. It is the primary task of the mission ad gentes to announce that it is in Christ, "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life' (Jn 14:6), that people find salvation" (Novo Millennio Ineunte, n. 56). This is an invitation to all, it is an urgent call that deserves an immediate and generous answer. We must set out! We must set out without delay!"

Many have understood that they have something to share for the mission of the Church (their time, their prayer, their financial resources, their abilities, their friendship and support). They are part of the Friends of the Missions.
