APRIL-MAY ISSUE

LIFE IS REAL

I was shocked by the following CNN report, at the beginning of last month (March): "A South-Korean couple was arrested for neglecting their 3-month old baby till she starved to death. They were so busy taking care of their" online child" that they forgot to feed their real-life baby. The couple fed their 3-month-old daughter once a day between marathon stretches in a local Internet cafe, where they were raising a virtual child in a fantasy role-playing the game Prius Online. Prius Online is a 3-D game in which players nurture an online companion, Anima, a young girl with mysterious powers who grows and increases her skills as the game progresses."

Nowadays, it is so tempting to live in a world of fantasy and fiction - using the technological means at our disposal - to evade our difficulties, struggles and the real challenges of life. If, on one hand, technology has made the world smaller, on the other hand, it has isolated many - those who remain before computer monitors for hours and hours, losing touch with the reality.

The Easter Mystery (Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus) is a call to embrace life in its mysterious reality not only of pain and sorrow but also of joyful celebration and hope. From the Resurrection, a new life-giving spirit pervaded the hearts and enlightened the minds of yesterday's disciples of Jesus. This is also true of today's. We are an Easter people, made to re-discover life, not by evading suffering, but by embracing it in the likeness of Jesus. Life is real. Jesus' Resurrection is real. We are disciples in a real world.
