APRIL-MAY ISSUE

LIFE IS REAL

I was shocked by the following CNN report, at the beginning of last month (March): "A South-Korean couple was arrested for neglecting their 3-month old baby till she starved to death. They were so busy taking care of their" online child" that they forgot to feed their real-life baby. The couple fed their 3-month-old daughter once a day between marathon stretches in a local Internet cafe, where they were raising a virtual child in a fantasy role-playing the game Prius Online. Prius Online is a 3-D game in which players nurture an online companion, Anima, a young girl with mysterious powers who grows and increases her skills as the game progresses."

Nowadays, it is so tempting to live in a world of fantasy and fiction - using the technological means at our disposal - to evade our difficulties, struggles and the real challenges of life. If, on one hand, technology has made the world smaller, on the other hand, it has isolated many - those who remain before computer monitors for hours and hours, losing touch with the reality.

The Easter Mystery (Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus) is a call to embrace life in its mysterious reality not only of pain and sorrow but also of joyful celebration and hope. From the Resurrection, a new life-giving spirit pervaded the hearts and enlightened the minds of yesterday's disciples of Jesus. This is also true of today's. We are an Easter people, made to re-discover life, not by evading suffering, but by embracing it in the likeness of Jesus. Life is real. Jesus' Resurrection is real. We are disciples in a real world.

A MISSIONARY MUST BE GENEROUS

Filipino Comboni missionary Bro. Simplicio Buena Soliven, has been working in Marsabit, Kenya, in a mission close to the Ethiopian border, for three years. As a social minister, he is happy to share his faith, talents and knowledge with the Kenyan people, especially prisoners and youth. He does what he likes best and stresses his belief that generosity of heart is a missionary's most important character trait.

TRUSTING IN THE POTTER'S HANDS

I am indeed very happy and grateful to God as my life's Potter for constantly recreating me in His great love and according to His will. I have never had any regrets since April 2005 when I voluntarily resigned from my 4-year accounting job and freely decided to enter the Daniel Comboni Seminary after a serious vocation discernment.

A MOTHER'S SAFARI

It was only when she visited her son in Africa that Mama Angelina stopped crying over the choice her son had made to be a missionary. That safari was unforgettable for many other reasons.
